With the release of her debut book 12-year-old Willow Classen from Blackheath has taken a step towards her dream of becoming a famous writer.
Willow’s recently published children’s book, The Thornston’s Monster Plants is described as “brimming with mystery, magic, and adventure – a perfect read for children who love spine-tingling stories.”
Writing at an early age
Mom Kim Classen says Willow began writing short stories at age 10.
“At the time, we were home schooling.
“I wanted to instill a love for reading in her, so we visited the library frequently.
“She developed an interest in reading about animals, insects, and similar topics as she wanted to be a veterinarian since she was five years old because of her love for animals but then it turned into her wanting to be an author of children’s books! To encourage her creativity, I suggested she start by brainstorming ideas for book topics and jotting down whatever came to mind.
Kim says Willow found writing by hand tedious but had typing lessons and prefers typing her stories. “It took her about three to four weeks to complete her first book.”
To have her first book released is “very exciting”, admits the young author.
As an avid reader, Willow became inspired to write her own book. “I took some inspiration from other authors and maybe also from movies,” she says about penning the story.
She is quick to answer who her favourite author is: “Rick Riordan, the author of the series Percy Jackson, and the writer of Daughter of the Deep.”
Willow, in Grade 6, is in a private school – since last year, following three years of home schooling.
In her introduction (“About the author”) on Amazon Books, she says home schooling allowed her freedom to explore her imagination and to develop her writing skills. Now she is happy to be among her peers. “I enjoy the public interaction. I love being around people,” she says.
Her “about intro” also states she is “passionate about animals, nature, gaming, and swimming.”
She also enjoys singing and soccer, Willow adds. “We started (with soccer) this week”.
She will continue writing – both scheduled and when the inspiration grabs hold. “I am writing a sequel and also another book on a different topic.” For now, it’s a secret.
To other children who might consider writing a book, Willow says: “You should be passionate. Do you really want to write? There’s no excuse like writer’s block … Let your imagination flow.”
