A Delft woman was allegedly shot and killed over R50 and her cellphone.

This is according to witnesses who reported that the woman’s cellphone and purse is missing.

The murder occurred on Sunday 11 June at a tavern in Buffalo Street in The Hague.

Delft police spokesperson Warrant officer Brian Daniels says police were alerted to the shooting at about 20:00. When officers arrived at the scene they found the body of a 38-year-old woman with a single gunshot wound to the side of her face just above her left eye.

“According to the owner of the tavern who is the husband of the deceased, two men and two women came to his tavern and requested him to give them two beers, however he told them that the tavern is closed and that he does not serve clients after hours,” Daniels says.

However, the two male suspects then requested that he give them R20 to go buy beers somewhere else and he informed them that he did not have any money on him and that he was about to leave, but he will check if his wife had some money.

“As he walked to his vehicle where his wife was sitting in the passenger seat, the men followed him and the husband proceeded to ask his wife for R20, but she only had a R50 note in her purse. His wife took out her wallet and wanted to give them a R50 note, but the husband refused and said he will fetch R20 from inside the house,” Daniels says.

The husband went inside the house looking for the money and while there he heard two gunshots and rushed outside where he found his wife lying outside the vehicle bleeding. The four persons had fled the scene.

Daniels says the deceased was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel.

Meanwhile a bulletin report was sent to the patrol vehicles in the area with a description of the suspects and at about 21:00 on the same day one of the patrol vehicles received information that the suspects fitting the description were walking in Gatwick Street and immediately proceeded to the location.

“The officers saw that one of the suspects entered the premises in Buffalo Street and one of the female suspects was found in the street and apprehended. Officers then entered the house with the permission of the owner and conducted a search where they found a man hiding under a bed in one of the bedrooms,” Daniels says.

A 24-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were arrested and charged with murder and will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on 13 June.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the two remaining suspects or any details of the incident are urged to contact the investigating officer Sergeant Barnard Wilson on 082 970 7892.
