Wheel thieves nabbed in Blouberg

Two thieves got more than they bargained for when trying to steal wheels from a vehicle in Bloubergstrand.

Two thieves got more than they bargained for when trying to steal wheels from a vehicle in Bloubergstrand.
The drama unfolded when residents and security companies gave chase during the early hours of Tuesday (yesterday) morning.

According to a statement by Table View police,  residents chased after two men they suspected of stealing wheels off a vehicle in Compass Close at about 03:50.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Adriana Chandler says Green Platoon Response Services immediately responded to the call from their control room and noticed one man being chased by two other men.

“The member knew that this could possibly be the suspect being chased by community members and he assisted.  The man running in the front was caught by the Green Platoon Response member.  It was confirmed that he was a man suspected of stealing wheels from a vehicle.”

Table View police were summoned to the scene and the man was handed over to them.  In the possession of the suspect was a “lock nut”, presumably used in the commission of the offence.  He was also found to have five mandrax tablets in his possession with an estimated street value of R400.

Chandler says officers attending the crime scene found residents crowding the road while D.S.S security officers apprehended another suspect.  The D.S.S security officer informed police that he caught the suspect after he removed wheels from a vehicle parked nearby.  Upon inspecting the vehicle it was noticed that the vehicle was placed on top of bricks and the wheels were placed between two vehicles.
Both suspects were arrested and are being detained at the Table View police station.  Further investigation will reveal if the suspects could be linked to other theft from motor vehicle cases.
“The community is commended for their sterling work in the assisted-apprehension of the suspects, together with D.S.S security and Green Platoon Response.”
