A Whatsapp message going around that the City of Cape Town has send out a letter to warn residents
not to drink tap water, is a hoax.
In the
Whatsapp message it is stated that the sender has just received a letter from the
City to warn residents to not under any circumstances drink water from
taps unless it is boiled.
“The water
has been declared contaminated. We have been told to alert our families. All
water even for use for mixing of juice and for our animals must be boiled. It
will apparently make us and our animals very sick,” read the message.
According
to a spokesperson of the City of Cape Town, it is a hoax and “probably one of
many to come”.
“Please know that the City is duty-bound to report any potential risks to public health. There is
nothing wrong with the municipal water supply. It is regularly tested and
conforms to national standards,” the spokesperson said.
