A cancer fund-raising and awareness walk last week was marked with doves, glitter, wings and tears.

The Women’s Walk to Wellness group hosted a Strides for Cancer, 5km walk on Thursday 30 October.

Cancer support and awareness groups, as well as fitness clubs, from all over the City descended on Westridge Gardens in waves of pink, which is the international colour of breast cancer awareness.

Amidst the 50 shades of pink, a few supporters wore green, which represents liver or lymphoma cancer.

Despite the undercurrent of sadness, most of the participants dressed in costume. Some survivors, sufferers and supporters also wore sashes declaring where they were in the battle against the disease.

Arisen Women, an upliftment non-profit, provided participants with free health checks while several cancer support organisations hosted information or fund-raising stalls.

White doves, which were donated to the event, were released in honour of those who had not survived the battle against the disease.
