Ward 70 residents gathered recently for a combined subcouncil meeting where Ward Councillor Ronél Viljoen presented an impressive summary of the past year’s achievements in community development, infrastructure improvements, and safety initiatives.

The meeting showcased the ward’s commitment to enhancing quality of life through collaborative efforts between the Ward Committee, local community groups, and various service providers.

Significant progress was reported on several major projects, including the completion of construction at the Wetlands and Fynbos Dam. The ward has also seen the successful implementation of the Wild Flower Stepping Stones Project, which resulted in the creation of a new Pollinator Garden and other community gardens.

Environmental conservation efforts have been particularly strong, with community groups actively maintaining open spaces across De Bron, Kenridge, Hoheizen, and Proteavalley. These efforts have been supported by the installation of new park lighting and regular weekly clean-ups conducted by the SALT team.

Water infrastructure has been a priority focus, with ongoing pipe replacement projects addressing major pipe bursts and improving the overall water supply system throughout the ward.

The retirement of the Tygervalley Head Librarian marked a transition period that has led to innovative solutions, including the introduction of small libraries in local parks, bringing reading resources closer to residents.

Community support initiatives have flourished, with donation-based programmes supporting Meals on Wheels continuing to serve local residents. In a notable gesture of community care, Chris Willemse donated 10 wheelchairs to Alta du Toit, demonstrating the spirit of giving that characterizes the ward.

The introduction of Safety Officers in Ward 70 represents a significant step forward in community security. This initiative has been complemented by grassroots fundraising efforts, particularly in Loevenstein, where the Kudud Street Community successfully raised funds for a new fence and gate to enhance local security.

The ward has maintained strong community bonds through various events designed to raise funds for park maintenance while fostering neighbourhood connections. Highlights included an Easter Egg Hunt and Halloween celebrations, which proved popular with families while supporting ongoing park improvement projects.

Major community clean-up initiatives have been particularly successful, with residents leading efforts supported by the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) and Solid Waste services.

The meeting emphasised the collaborative approach that has made these achievements possible, with active participation from the Ward Committee, Tygerberg NPC, and various neighbourhood groups continuing to drive positive change in the community.

Ward Councillor Viljoen expressed appreciation for the community’s active involvement and commitment to making Ward 70 a model of successful local governance and community cooperation.
