The Food for People Ubuntu Foundation, the Western Cape Church of the Nazerene and the local Ward councillor Angus McKenzie recently joined forces to tackle hunger in the Bonteheuwel area.
According to McKenzie the partnership will see the partners play a critical role in not only supporting but driving the distribution of up to 5 000 meals per day across the city to schools, old age homes and vulnerable people.
“It further seeks to use food as the cornerstone for building a new future and new direction away from poverty, unemployment and lack of education. Using food, we seek to uplift, engage and council those stuck in the cycle of poverty, unemployment and hopelessness.
“While the need is huge, we have started. Our reach will not be dictated by race, by religion or even by creed but rather by need. Need knows no skin colour, need knows no religion and hunger cannot be divided – it will only be met by this partnership,” says McKenzie.
The initial target areas will include Langa, Heideveld, Bonteheuwel, Valhalla Park and Bishop Lavis. “As a collective we believe with the consistent help of others that indeed together and united we can make a difference, a real difference in the lives of those less fortunate,” he says.
