Ravensmead police welcome the arrests of five suspects following a tipoff from community members on Friday 26 January.
Police spokesperson Odwa Makupula says police members were alerted while on patrol.
“Our members were busy with their normal patrol duties when they received information from the community members that there was a vehicle parked inside the yard at 63 Aster Avenue, in Uitsig, with guns underneath it,” says Makupula.
He says they quickly followed up and found that two firearms were buried.
“It was a 9mm pistol black with magazine with no bullets and serial number filed off. The other one was a 7.65 mm pistol black and brown with serial number and magazine with no bullets,” explains Makupula.
The suspects, aged between 18 and 43-years-old, were charged with illegal possession of firearms.
“We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely express words of thank you and gratitude to the community for their contribution and support in ensuring that Ravensmead community is a gun free society.
“We also encourage other community members to come forward with information about guns, drugs and other illegal activities in the community,” adds Makupula.
