Two men
(aged 37 and 40 years) died and three others were critically injured following
a shooting incident at the Delft South taxi rank on Thursday 19 April.
According
to Delft police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Brian Daniels, the incident took
place at approximately 20:25.
“Upon arrival,
police were informed that four unknown males had approached [the victims] and
started shooting.
“A witness
described how passengers in the taxi were about to leave on their long-distance
journey,” says Daniels.
Passengers
apparently took cover under their seats.
The injured
men, aged between 23 and 37, were transported by private transport to a nearby
medical facility.
Daniels
says police confiscated 18 spent cartridges from an R5 assault rifle, as well
as 35 9mm spent cartridges on the scene.
“The motive
for the attack is unknown at this stage and no arrests have been made. Police
opened three counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder for
investigation,” says Daniels.
