Speculations of a serial killer on the prowl in Wallacedene have been dispelled, following the discovery of two bodies in shallow water a week apart.

The first body was found on Sunday 11 September at a local dam near the Monqo informal settlement.

Police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi says the body was found floating on the water.

“The man in the water has sustained serious injuries. Police divers were called to the scene to retrieve the body from the water. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel.”

The second body floating in a dam near the farm Nuutgewek was found the following Sunday 18 September.

“The diving unit retrieved the body and further inspection indicated that the victim sustained an open wound to his head. The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. The motive for the attack is unknown,” he says.

Both these victims had reportedly been found with both hands and feet bound by ropes and wires. Police, however, would not confirm this or whether the two crimes were linked.

Chair of the Kraaifontein CPF Rob Bisset does not believe these murders were the work of a serial killer, as was reported in the media last week.

“It is highly unlikely. There have been so many murders in the area lately that it would be improbable to pin it to a serial killer. In general violent crime is very rife in this area presently. I have spoken to many community members since the murders to get more information, and it seems that other hidden agendas are involved in these murders,” he says.

Bisset could not divulge the said “hidden agendas”.

Wallacedene Development Forum secretary Masilakhe Ngqebe believes vigilante justice was responsible for the killings, as he said to IOL.

He condemned the killings saying “we could not live in a community where individuals could play judge, jury and executioner.”

Kraaifontein police are investigating these murder cases.
