Mayco Member for Urban Waste Management Grant Twigg recently paid a visit to Monte Vista to address concerns regarding the collection of refuse and recycling and, as a safety concern, to have these collections on the same day.

He met Tyrel Painczyk, chair of the Monte Vista and Plattekloof Glen Ratepayers and Residents Association, and fellow member David Bresler on Thursday last week after a request was made to have these issues addressed.

“The meeting went well, and although we are in early discussion stages it is imperative that we look at all areas’ collection days to make sure the necessary changes can be implemented to achieve the end goal.

“Concerns about safety were raised by both David and me, particularly about criminal elements who often hide behind the scratchers to scout the area,” said Painczyk.

“Combining all collections into one day a week will never eradicate the issues we face, but it will at least reduce the number of days when we have people scouring the area with ill-intentions.

The association’s next meeting will be with all role-players as well as the various councillors, where a consensus will be reached, he said.

“Its important to note that bin scratchers frequent areas due only to the valuables that are found mixed in the waste. It’s important to make sure valuables, old electronics and anything that may have value is disposed of responsibly.”
