A recent high-visibility joint enforcement operation in Goodwood has been hailed as a success by both the Goodwood police and the City of Cape Town, following the arrest of 12 undocumented individuals and the strengthening of ties between enforcement agencies.

The operation, which took place ahead of the long weekend, focused on improving visibility, targeting identified crime hotspots, and encouraging collaboration between the police, law enforcement, metro police, immigration, and private security.

“The objective of the operation was to increase visibility and enhance collaboration between law enforcement agencies,” says Lt Col Marius Roux, acting station commander at Goodwood police. “And we believe this was achieved.”

The 12 undocumented individuals arrested during the operation appeared in court on Monday 28 July.

Data-driven approach

According to both Roux and the City’s Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, the areas targeted during the operation were selected using crime pattern analysis and intelligence gathering.

“These efforts proved to be successful,” Smith confirms.

“No unexpected challenges were recorded during the operation.”

Roux adds that although the operation ran smoothly, more resources would have allowed authorities to expand their reach.

Will there be more operations like this?

Both the police and the City have committed to running more integrated enforcement operations in Goodwood, although the frequency will depend on crime trends and operational demand.

“Similar operations have been held before and will continue, with even more resources in future,” says Roux.

How to get involved

Community members and Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) groups continue to play a crucial role in crime prevention efforts.

Smith encourages residents to report any suspicious behaviour or criminal activity, which can help law enforcement plan and respond more effectively.

“Neighbourhood watches can also continue working with the CPF and the City’s enforcement services,” he adds. “Their involvement directly contributes to the success of future operations.”
