T’View women taking taxis targeted

Table View Police have issued a warning to commuters after it came to their attention that robbers pretending to be taxi-operators, are targeting women on busy roads in the Parklands area.

Captain Adriana Chandler, police spokesperson, says a total of five such cases have already been reported to the police.

These cases were reported over the past four weeks.

Chandler says a white or silver Toyota Avanza is being used in the commission of this crime.

“Two men pretend to be taxi-operators in the Parklands area. When they observe a woman, they will stop and shout a name of an area where a taxi would normally travel to.

“Once the woman enters the vehicle, the one suspect will rob the victim of her cellular phone or cash, then let her go.

“In some instances, the woman is assaulted with a tazer-gun,” Chandler says.

She says the police are unable to provide a registration number of the vehicle as yet.

“Women using this route are asked to be vigilant,” Chandler says.
