Kuils River police arrested a trio of foreign nationals for possession of a suspected rhino horn and ivory.
According to a report from provincial police, officers of the Kuils River Police Station were conducting patrols at Zevenwacht Mall when they pulled over a suspicious silver Mazda with dark tinted windows on Tuesday 10 January.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk says inside the vehicle there were three occupants, aged 27, 32, and 58.
He says when searching the vehicle, officers discovered one suspected rhino horn, 10 suspected ivory balls and one suspected lion tooth. “One of the three occupants is a foreign national from Zambia and the other two occupants are from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.”
He says the three suspects were detained at Kuils River Police Station and the investigation is being conducted by the Kuils River Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit.
The trio are expected to appear in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court today (12 January).
