Heavy traffic disruption is expected in Durbanville when the City of Cape Town’s Transport and Urban Development Authority is starting a R38 million upgrading project of Durbanville Avenue from Kendal Road to Church Street.
Construction work to resurface the 2,9 km portion of the dual carriageway section is expected to commence on Monday 9 October, according to a media release by the City.
It is envisaged that the project will be completed by June next year, depending on weather conditions.
According to the media release, this is part of an ongoing maintenance programme.
The project entails exposing the existing services, installing ducts at all intersections (to provide space for future service providers such as fibre-optic companies to cross the road without causing any damage to the new road surface), and removing cracked asphalt surface and replacing it with two new asphalt layers – one of which contains recycled, crumbed rubber from old tyres and 20% recycled asphalt.
Work will take place between 09:00 and 16:00 daily. In general, only one lane in a direction will be closed at a time. Direct access off Durbanville Avenue may be temporarily affected on days when the contractor is working past these properties, but all access will be maintained.
Should road closures be necessary, only the roads leading into Durbanville Avenue at the specific intersection will be closed and alternative routes will be marked clearly.
Durbanville Avenue will not be closed.
Allowance has also been made to work in the intersections over weekends, Sundays included, to minimise the disruption to traffic at the intersections.
“We apologise for the inconvenience and I urge road users to be patient and exercise caution for the duration of the project.
“Once completed, this project will not only prolong the life of the road, but we will all benefit from the new smoother road surface and improved driving conditions,” says Suzette Little, the City’s Mayco member for area north.
