A private testing centre is in trouble after traffic cops found an unroadworthy vehicle approved at the centre in Bellville South.
According to a report by Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, Traffic Services uncovered an apparent roadworthy certificate scam when they stopped a truck in Bellville South on Thursday 11 May.
He says two traffic officers from the Road Haulage Unit pulled over the truck that was fully laden with rubble, en route to the dumping site in Sacs Circle.
“They inspected the vehicle and found no less than a dozen major defects including broken shocks, worn tyres, broken lights and defective brakes. The situation took a disturbing turn when the driver presented a roadworthy certificate that had been issued just hours before at a private testing centre. The truck was immediately suspended from operating on a public road and the matter reported to the inspectorate at the Western Cape Department of Transport for further investigation and feedback, including opening a criminal charge against the company/examiner who issued the roadworthy certificate.”
