The province’s roads remain full
of speedsters, frauds and drunken drivers, according to a statement released by
the Western Cape provincial traffic services on Wednesday 3 January.
The statement details the number
of cases handled by Traffic Services over the past weekend, which includes a
motorist who was arrested in Brackenfell for being in possession of false
documentation.
Apart from this arrest,
provincial police also managed to arrest a motorist in the same area for
speeding. This motorist apparently recorded the highest speed in the province
for the weekend, clocking 221 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.
Provincial traffic spokesperson,
Kenny Africa, says a total of 1149 motorists were arrested for speeding.
According to the statement, a
preliminary report indicates that 12 people had died on the Western Cape’s road
this weekend.
One of the incidents in which a
driver and pedestrian lost their lives, occurred on the R300 highway near
Hindle Road on Monday 1 January at 13:00.
A total of 33 motorists across
the province were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of
alcohol.
