Some traffic calming measures in areas within the Blaauwberg district and new footways in Witsand are currently being implemented by the City of Cape Town’s transport directorate.

The work commenced on Monday 17 January and will continue for 14 weeks, if all goes as planned.

The City is advising residents and road users of the construction of traffic calming measures.

Traffic calming is the practice of placing physical measures in a road to control the speed at which motorists travel.

The measures will include raised pedestrian crossings and raised intersections. The current focus is on the protection of vulnerable road users where they typically occur in their highest volumes.

This typically includes schools and other public facilities, such as hospitals:

  • In Tijgerhof on the corner of De Grendel and Pringle road, the team will implement a pedestrian safety improvement in close proximity to a school.
  • In Table View on the corner of Hof Street and Fairway Road the team will implement a pedestrian safety improvement in close proximity to a school.
  • In Milnerton along Jasmin Road, the team will implement a pedestrian safety improvement in close proximity to a play park.
  • In Sunset Beach on the corner of Ocean and Balers way, the team will implement pedestrian safety improvement measures in close proximity to a shopping centre.
  • Residents in Joe Slovo can also look forward to new footways along Mars Way, Mercury Way and Neptune Road being constructed during the course of this project.

The next phase of the work within the Blaauwberg district will include the new footways in Witsand. These footways have been prioritised to ensure pedestrian road safety in the area. This forms part of the ward allocation projects.

Thus, residents and road users in Witsand are advised of the construction of new footways along Chris Hani Street and Nthete Road.

According to the City’s Mayco member for transport, Rob Quintas, ensuring road safety for all road users will always remain a priority for the City.

“We will continue to identify areas with our various communities where urgent traffic calming and pedestrian facilities are needed. There is a great demand and therefore we work in accordance with the Traffic Calming Policy where our focus is to protect the most vulnerable road users, typically in close proximity to schools and public facilities. Given that road maintenance usually causes some inconvenience, I urge residents to please be patient while the work is under way and to comply with the signage. Once complete, the pedestrians in the area will truly benefit from it,” he says.

All of the work mentioned will take place Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 17:00.

Traffic moving in both directions will be affected and flag personnel will regulate traffic in one direction at a time. Workareas will be temporarily demarcated to regulate traffic flow.

Residents may park their vehicles in the demarcated area after 18:00 provided that they are removed by 06:30. Parked vehicles that obstruct the construction works will be moved or towed away to avoid interfering with the work.
