Informal traders in Plattekloof was again on the agenda at a subcouncil 3 meeting held on Thursday last week.

Cheryl Visser, councillor for Ward 1, pointed out that informal traders particularly at the entrance to Northlink College in Rothschild Boulevard are of concern.

She told fellow-councillors that she has received several complaints from residents in the area about the traders who trade there illegally.

There are no desigated trading bays at the site in Rothschild Boulevard.

Another concern are the minibus-taxis that stop at the entrance near the traders, she said.

Shirley Alexander, district area coordinator – area economic development north, said her department is aware of the matter and that she personally has been to the site and met with the traders. She said law enforcement officers also go out as regularly as possible.

Law enforcement officer inspector Don Bardo who presented the department’s quarterly report for the month of August also confirmed this.

With regards to the taxis in Rothschild Boulevard, he said some have been issued fines.

Bardo said there are currently two law enforcement officers in the area.

He said two women trade at the entrance to the campus. Some of their items have also been confiscated by the officers, he said.

“They are busy and we are aware of the problems,” Bardo said.

The department has managed to issue four fines for contravening the informal trading bylaws.

Visser welcomed the news and said it is good to know that items are being confiscated and that this is indeed “positive news”.

Bardo said that for the month their department has received 399 service requests and that they had managed to close a total of 551. A total of 32 service requests are still unresolved.

The law enforcement department also managed to issue around 200 fines for dumping and littering.
