Learners and staff at Curro Brackenfell had a truly unforgettable morning when one of South Africa’s most respected voices of justice and human rights, Prof Thuli Madonsela, recently paid a visit to the school.

The former public protector addressed a packed special assembly sharing personal stories and career highlights that drove home the importance of doing what is right, event when its tough. She challenged her young audience to become agents of positive change within their communities.

“Madonsela shared personal stories and career highlights that drove home the importance of courage, integrity, and doing what’s right, even when it’s tough. Her words struck a chord, offering students a powerful reminder of how ethical leadership can change the world. It wasn’t just a history lesson. Her message was very much about the future in South Africa, challenging the next generation to step up, lead with purpose, and make a difference in their communities,” says Cherize Ebersonh.

The occasion was made even more special by the presence of top Curro Holdings leaders, including CEO Cobus Loubser, Deputy CEO Mari Lategan, CFO Burtie September, and business executive Shaun McMurtry.

Executive head at Curro Brackenfell JP le Roux reflected on the inspiring words of Professor Madonsela, who reminded us that “we shouldn’t confuse what is difficult with that which is impossible”.

“Our focus is to be brave and brilliant, and she reiterated that we should not do something for applause from other people. In addition, integrity, kindness, and truth are non-negotiable, even when the situation proves to be difficult,” he said.

“Her visit was more than just a keynote, it was a moment of inspiration, offering students a firsthand look at what it means to lead with purpose.”

As a lasting tribute to the day, Curro Brackenfell will be planting the Thuli Madonsela rose on school grounds.
