Three female commuters died in a motor-vehicle accident in
Robert Sobukwe Road, between Radnor Street and Symphony Way in Belhar, on
Wednesday morning, 5 March, and 11 injured people were transported to a nearby
hospital.
Western Cape police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi as well
as the City of Cape Town Traffic Services confirmed the accident, which
occurred around 08:30 near the University of Western Cape’s (UWC) Bellville
campus.
Swartbooi told TygerBurger of the circumstances
surrounding this incident, now under investigation.
“Bellville South police responded to [an emergency alert] on
Wednesday 5 March. On their arrival in Robert Sobukwe Road about 08:30 they
found a Toyota Quantum and a Kia involved in a collision. Further investigation
revealed the bodies of three females who had sustained fatal injuries. The
victims were declared dead on the scene by the medical personnel.”
Details of the injuries sustained by the 11 people
transported to hospital were still unknown at the time of posting.
Swartbooi added that the Bellville South police had
registered a case of culpable homicide for further investigation. No arrests
had yet been confirmed.
