Kuils River recently had three shooting incidents in three days – resulting in two fatalities and several injuries.
Man gunned down in broad daylight
The first shooting took place around midday on Saturday 26 July, when a 35-year-old man was fatally shot on Nooiensfontein Road.
Acting station commander of Kuils River police, Lt Col Nokwanda Harmans, said that according to an eyewitness, who was with the deceased and another friend, they were making their way from Shoprite to the Pick n Pay Liquor Store at River Park.
As they crossed the road opposite Cash Crusaders, an unknown man approached them from the Pick n Pay parking area, drew a firearm, and began shooting.
The deceased ran in the direction of the taxi rank, where he collapsed and died.
Harmans said the suspect is still unknown. Police are currently investigating the incident.
Drive-by shooting
On Sunday 27 July four teenagers were targeted in a shooting incident in Sarepta.
Harmans said the incident happened around 16:40 on the corner of Dalia and Tulip streets.
An eyewitness reported that a group of youngsters were playing dice on the street corner when a white Opel Corsa pulled up.
Four men exited the vehicle, two of them armed, and opened fire without warning.
The youngsters scattered and ran in different directions. Three were wounded, and one died at the scene.
The deceased (18) has been identified. The injured victims are all around 17 years of age. No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
Attempted murder in rush hour
In the third incident, an attempted murder docket was opened following a shooting on Monday 28 July at around 08:45 on the corner of Van Riebeeck and Langverwacht roads.
Harmans stated that the complainant was driving his white VW Golf GTI, exiting a parking area on Langverwacht Road and approaching the traffic circle near Van Riebeeck Road, when a man wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, and carrying a black sling bag approached his vehicle and began firing at him.
The driver managed to escape unharmed and later stopped at the N1 Engen garage in the direction of Paarl.
The complainant told police he recognised the gunman as the alleged leader of a local gang, the Dixi Boys.
Following up on the information, police recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the attack in Sive Street, behind ST3 Security. Cartridge casings were also found at the scene in Langverwacht Road.
No arrests have been made at this stage. The case remains under investigation.
