The Oasis Special School is proud of their learners’ achievements after many of them performed at the recent Courage Eisteddfod for children with special needs at the Paarl School.
The Courage Eisteddfod was established in 2019 established to create a space for learners with special educational needs where they can perform and create.
Oasis Special School offers specialised professional education to severely mentally handicapped learners. It caters for 256 learners ranging between the ages of 6 and 18 years.
The learners are placed according to age and functional ability.
The school opened their autistic unit this year and will add four more classes for autistic learners next year. They came out on top at six of the categories at the Eisteddfod. The winners were Aqeel Davids (poetry), Zara Baartman (oral), Aquilla Perr (singing), Bevan Pretorius (beat boxing and rap), Amy Joy Carelse (crafts) and Jerniel le Roux (visual art). They are from Delft, Belhar, Elsies River and Eerste Rivier.
Anandi Spies from the school says they are strong believers that success should be applauded. “Children with different abilities also need to shine and their courage and achievements should be celebrated. Like the principal, the interest of the child always takes priority,” says Spies.
The school also recently elected the prefects for 2024.
