Public order police were called into Joe Slovo Park this morning  after rioting taxi drivers blocked Koeberg Road.

TygerBurger arrived on the scene shortly after 08:00 and found taxi drivers congregating along Freedom Way with police nearby. A taxi driver who only identified himself as Thabo said they were upset about a new MyCiTi route. The Phoenix MyCiTi station on Omurumba Road was burnt and closed. It is unclear who is responsible.

Police spokesperson Warrant Office Daphne O’Reilly says at about 06:00 today taxi drivers blocked off Koeberg Road. She said no injuries were reported.

Shortly before 09:00 the group walked up Freedom Way and police, Law Enforcement and Metro Police could be seen preparing to follow them. Residents were instructed to go into their homes while police pursued the group. A short while later two taxis could be seen speeding down Freedom Way into Kiwu Road then dissappearing. The taxis were loaded with men. A third taxi arrived shortly afterwards, but as the driver struggled to locate where the other two taxis had gone, residents directed him towards Kiwu Road.
