The annual Take a Hike Day will now take place on Monday 17 November, and not Saturday the 15th as originally scheduled, organisers said. The event, an environmental clean-up initiative on Table Mountain, was set to take place this weekend, but has now been rescheduled to Monday.
The decision was taken due to adverse weather and strong winds forecasted this weekend.
The event is organised by the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company in partnership with Table Mountain National Park.
“Safety is always our top priority,” said Wahida Parker, managing director of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company. “We appreciate everyone’s understanding and enthusiasm and look forward to welcoming our hikers on Monday for a meaningful morning on the mountain.”
Take a Hike Day initiative encourages participants to hike, explore and clean as they go, helping to “leave it better than you found it.”
Now in its fifth year, the event has become a cornerstone of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company’s sustainability calendar, drawing hundreds of volunteers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts to take part in caring for one of the world’s most famous natural landmarks.
“We fully support the decision to move the event in the interest of safety,” added Megan Taplin, Park Manager: Table Mountain National Park.
The routes on the day include Platteklip Gorge, the Contour Path, and Kloof Corner. Participants are required to pre-register for the event. Check-in for the pre-registered hikers are at 06:00 to 08:00. The litter hand-in at the top station is at 14:00.
Participants can park at the Lower Tafelberg Road parking area and use the free cableway shuttle to the lower cableway station before heading on their chosen route. Register to take part by visiting https://shorturl.at/P9MKf
All existing registrations remain valid for the new date, the organisers said.
