Table View High School recently introducted their first team Safety Patrol Boys to safeguard learners and help do their bit to combat crime in the area.

TygerBurger recently reported of the crime increase in the Table View and surrounding areas where residents voiced their concerns at a Community Police Imbizo. The school appointed the following learners:

  • Captain: Ryan Viljoen;
  • Vice captain: Handro Bredenkamp;
  • Ryan Naude;
  • Jonathan Nelson;
  • Aidan Jeffreys and
  • Tyler Hawkins.

Awareness

Viljoen, the Safety Patrol Boys captain, says whether you are walking, cycling, or using other transport, you must always be aware of your surroundings.

“This means using designated crossing areas, looking both ways before crossing, and never just assume that drivers can see us. Please make sure that you are aware of your surroundings when walking, especially now that it is darker in the mornings. Obey traffic signals and signs. Don’t get distracted by conversation, listening to music, or using your phone,” he says.

He adds that anything that takes your attention from the road is not very smart and can have serious consequences.

“Unfortunately, the crime rate has increased. Make a habit of walking in groups. Listen to the scholar patrol learners. If you choose to disobey these rules and instructions that are put in place for your safety you will be referred to your grade head. Road safety is a collective effort that requires the commitment of each and every one of us,” he says.

They have identified the following safety zones:

  • Cycle Teknix – 145 Blaauwberg Road;
  • Battery Center – 190 corner Blaauwberg Road and Janssens and
  • Weather Prufe – Shop 1, Flamingo Square.
