The recent production by Edgemead High School of the musical Annie was a resounding success, playing as it did to full, appreciative houses, the school said last week.
Staged in the school hall from Wednesday 7 May to Saturday 10 May, it saw a total of seven performances, six of them nearly fully booked and the final evening completely sold out, Bianke Bekker, head of performing arts and of music, said.
She said the cast comprised 41 members supported by a backstage, hair and make-up crew of 26 individuals.
The orchestra included 21 musicians, seven of whom were current high-school learners, one a recent matriculant, three members of the high-school music staff and several external professionals.
Dedication
The production team consisted of 10 dedicated staff members, fulfilling roles such as producer, director, musical director, set design and construction, costume design, hair and make-up.
The puppet, “Sandy the Dog”, was handcrafted by Merryn Carver, Cape Town-based theatre maker, designer and puppet maker, Bekker said.
Auditions were held in October last year, with rehearsals commencing the following month.
“The cast dedicated their entire first-term holiday and the special schools’ holiday week to intensive rehearsals,” said Bekker.
As part of the school’s commitment to delivering a professional theatre experience, its school hall was transformed into a fully-equipped theatre space.
“This included constructing a stage extension, installing tiered audience seating and using high-end sound and lighting equipment provided by Live and Direct. Our ultimate aim at the high school is to offer learners an unforgettable experience.”
Edgemead High School presents a large-scale musical biennially, the next scheduled for 2027.
