- The Melkbosstrand CPF has relaunched its Sports Against Crime initiative, aimed at keeping children engaged in sports and out of trouble.
- The program, which forms part of the 2024-2025 Community Safety Plan, encourages school attendance and offers local youth a safe, supportive environment.
- Community members are urged to support the initiative through volunteering and sponsorship.
Every year, the Melkbosstrand Community Police Forum (CPF) and its members identify elements that could affect the safety and security of the community with the launch of their Community Safety Plan.
Together with the Melkbosstrand police, the CPF re-launched the project Sports Against Crime, a vital component of the 2024-’25 Melkbosstrand Community Safety Plan.
Samie Kleynhans, chair of the Melkbosstrand CPF, says every year’s safety and security plan includes children not attending school.
he says.
He adds after covid, many things changed, including funding from the provincial government, and they struggled to get the project going. “Sadly, the main problem of kids not attending school continues and we had to start the project again, with limited resources,” Kleynhans says.
This initiative aims to engage and occupy children in sports, steering them away from potential mischief and fostering a positive, healthy lifestyle.
“Our mission is to provide a safe and supportive environment where all Melkbosstrand kids can develop their athletic skills, build confidence, and forge lasting friendships. We’re kicking off with regular soccer games and practise sessions, and plan to introduce additional sports as the project evolves,” Kleynhans says.
Clean-up
The first step of the project is to clear areas that they hope to use.
he says.
To make this vision a reality, they are urging the community and local businesses to lend their support in the form of:Manpower: Volunteer coaches, referees, and mentors to guide and inspire our young participants.Sponsorship: Funding for equipment, venue rental, and other essential resources.Possible funding: Contributions to help sustain the project and ensure its long-term success.
“By getting involved, you’ll not only be supporting the well-being and development of Melkbosstrand’s youth but also contributing to a safer, more harmonious community,” he says.
“Together, let’s make a difference in the lives of our children and build a brighter future for Melkbosstrand,” Kleynhans says.
