Motorists travelling along the N1 highway are advised to abide by all speed restrictions amid ongoing roadworks.
The roadworks are being carried out by the provincial transport and public works department and is part of a project to extend the third lane on the N1 from west of Durban Road to beyond the Old Oak interchange.
According to a notice issued by the contractor, various speed restrictions will be applicable from today (Monday 13 February) until Saturday (18 February).
Two weeks ago, similar speed restrictions were implemented and during this time a vehicle overturned and landed in the construction site on the N1 highway colliding with a construction worker. Two people were killed in the accident.
Department spokesperson, Byron la Hoe, says the lower speed restrictions are in place to reduce the risk to both motorists and construction workers.
“The accident that occurred recently should serve to highlight the need for motorists to abide to the speed restriction as well as the unpredictability of how, when and where accidents can occur. Lower speeds mean more time is available for the motorist to correct and avoid a potentially life threatening accident,” he says.
According to the notice issued by the contractor, a general speed restriction of 60km/h will be applicable for the duration of the road works.
