Soneike High School’s class of 2024 achieved a 90,3% pass rate – considerably more than the 78,8% pass rate in 2023.
Just more than half of the class (51%) is eligible to pursue Bachelor degree studies.
Principal Ronel Baker described it as a heartening display of resilience and grit.
“This remarkable feat is a testament to the school’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence, particularly in core subjects.
“Notably, our top achievers excelled in science and mathematics, with subjects like physical science, life sciences, agricultural science, and geography featuring prominently.”
The school’s top achiever, Wade Hammit, passed with an outstanding 91% average. Micaela Witbooi, with 89%, followed closely.
Hammit will be studying civil engineering at Stellenbosch University.
Core subjects
Baker said the 51% Bachelor’s pass rate is a significant milestone as it demonstrates the school’s ability to prepare learners for success in their chosen fields.
“The school’s focus on core subjects has sparked a timely conversation about the importance of preserving these subjects in ‘disadvantaged’ schools.”
She says amidst concerns that some schools are dropping core subjects to boost pass rates, Soneike High School’s parents are vocal about maintaining the integrity of the curriculum.
“Parents have asked us not to compromise on core subjects as their children need these skills to succeed in an increasingly competitive world. Districts must support schools prioritising academic rigor, rather than sacrificing substance for superficial gains.”
Baker emphasised that the school is dedicated to providing a well-rounded education.
“We refuse to sacrifice core subjects on the altar of competition. Our learners deserve better. We’re proud to offer a range of subjects, including mathematics, physical science, life sciences, agricultural science, geography, economics, business studies, and accounting.”
She said the school’s success would not have been possible without the support of the director and team of the Metro East Education Department (MEED). ”Their guidance and expertise have been invaluable.”
Baker said Soneike High School will continue to defy expectations and push boundaries.
