Elsies River police are appealing to motorists to report smash-and-grab incidents, no matter how minor it may seem.
Police spokesperson Daphne O’Reilly says there has been a spate of incidents in the area, with sporadic reports to police, but she believes not all cases are being reported.
“If people don’t report, the police won’t know. We urge the community to report incidents so extra patrols can be done in the areas,” says O’Reilly.
A hotspot for smash-and-grabs in the area includes the corner of 31st Avenue and Owen Street. There are also some incidents on the corners of Halt and Viking roads.
She says these incidents often occur during morning and afternoon peak.
O’Reilly says: “It’s sad that we can’t drive where we want to, but at the same time we need to be aware of our surroundings and not make ourselves targets.
“According to the Road Traffic Act, we are not allowed to drive with our cellphones so I urge motorists not to be on cellphones while behind the wheel. Don’t check messages because that can wait until you reach your destination.”
O’Reilly advises that when motorists get to these hotspot areas, they should close their windows and put valuables in the boot instead.
