The community and family came together at a memorial on Friday to bid farewell to Table View officer, Capt Linda Buqa (54), who lost his life in the line of duty.
Buqa was shot and killed in the Site 5 informal settlement in Table View on Sunday 19 November.
He was stationed at Table View Police Station.
No suspects had been arrested as of Tuesday 28 November.
According to reports, Buqa was off duty during the shooting in Site 5. The suspects also fled with his firearm.
Brig Novela Potelwa, police spokesperson, said the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident were being investigated by Hawks detectives. The motive is expected to be unravelled as the investigation unfolds.
Seventh officer killed
On Friday, provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembisile Patekile called on the community to help find justice for Buqa and to report any information to the police.
Buqa is the seventh police officer wkilled in the province within three months.
A memorial service and wreath laying ceremony was held at the Table View Police Station on Friday, where Buqa’s family from the Eastern Cape attended.
Mbongeni Buqa, the fallen hero’s brother, delivered an eulogy and said they were deeply saddened by the news. He said they will miss Buqa especially during the Christmas festivities.
Capt Adriana Chandler, Table View police spokesperson, was the programme director and the Table View police choir performed a musical item.
“The late Buqa was a quiet man with a large presence,” she said.
“He was tall in stature. His funeral will take place in the Eastern Cape, the dates for these must still be confirmed.”
Residents pinned flowers on the gate at the Table View Police Station to honour Buqa.
Background
Buqa, hailed from Butterworth in the Eastern Cape and is survived by two daughters, aged 25 and 20 and two sons aged 25 and 27. He joined the police on 9 September 1993.
He was a shift commander and was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 December 2018 to Table View Police Station.
He worked in Centane when he started his career in the police and was later transferred to Butterworth in 1996. From 2005 till 2018 he worked at Cofimvaba Police Station.
He held a National Diploma in Police Management (1999) and BA (Honours) in police science (2001).
