Shot teen was not enrolled at school

Police say information provided at the scene of a shooting was false.

Police have corrected information on an incident in which a Bonteheuwel teen was reportedly shot on Wednesday morning (11 January) while waiting for a lift to school. Instead, it has since been determined that the 17-year-old currently fighting for his life is a known gang member.

Police initially released a statement indicating the teen was waiting for a lift to school when he was shot in the face on the corners of Redberry Street and Bonteheuwel Avenue at 08:00.

Bishop Lavis police spokesperson, Captain Marie Louw, says while investigating the matter the detective established that incorrect information had been supplied at the scene of the crime.

She says the detective visited the School of Skills in Elsies River (where it was believed the boy was enrolled) and it has been established that he is a former learner.

At this stage, she says, the teen is still receiving treatment at Groote Schuur Hospital and is allegedly a member of the 28s gang.
