A police officer who was shot in front of his house in Delft by two unknown men on Thursday (26 October) died in hospital on Saturday (28 October).
According to Delft police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Brian Daniels, Constable Malakazi died at about 12:00 at Bellville Melomed hospital.
Daniels says the shooting incident occurred around 21:15 at N2 Gateway, Delft.
Daniels says when police arrived at the scene of the shooting, they were informed by a neighbour that a police constable stationed at Delft had been attacked by two unknown men in front of his house.
“It was revealed that the two suspects attempted to rob the 32-year-old constable of his motor vehicle and a fight ensued,” Daniels says.
He says one of the suspects took out a firearm and hit the constable over the head while his accomplice produced a firearm and shot the constable once in the stomach.
“Both suspects fled the scene on foot without taking the vehicle,” Daniels says.
The seriously injured constable was transported to a nearby medical facility by his wife.
“Police recovered one spent cartridge on the scene and no arrests have been executed,” Daniels says.
One of the suspects was described as tall and dressed in a long brown jacket with blue jeans, while the other suspect was dressed in a grey jacket with blue jeans.
“We urge the community or anyone who witnessed the incident or who knows the whereabouts of the suspects to come forward with any information with regards to this incident,” he says.
