An Elsies River shop owner was shot dead and a customer left
injured in a shooting on Thursday evening (10 August).
The shooting happened on the corners of Southern Cross and
Siddique avenues in Salberau around 17:35, say police.
Elsies River police spokesperson, Captain Daphe O’Reilly,
says police were called to the scene where they found one victim lying on the
front of Budget Supermarket and another inside the shop.
“It is alleged that the owner of the shop, Kazi Rana (45),
was standing at the front of the shop when he was approached by unknown
suspects. The suspects opened fire and shot Rana in the stomach and twice in
the head.”
It is alleged that one of the bullets pierced Rana’s head
through a display cabinet inside the shop and hit the second victim, a
19-year-old, in the cheek, O’Reilly says.
“Mr Kazi Rana died on the scene as a result of his injuries
and the 19-year-old victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is
in a stable condition. Two cartridges, one live round and one projectile were
found on the scene.”
Rana is from Rylands and the second victim from Salberau,
says O’Reilly.
She says the suspects and motive for the murder and
attempted murder are still unknown at this stage. Police are following possible
leads as no items were taken from the victims or the shop.
“A case of murder and attempted murder are under
investigation”.
