Shake up in Blue Downs

Police minister launches new operations centre in Blue Downs cluster.

The Blue Downs police cluster is set to receive a shake up with the introduction of a new Operations Command Centre.

The centre was launched by police minister Fikile Mbalula and acting national commissioner Lieutenant-General Khomotso Phahlane.

The centre, Phahlane explained, is set to consist of detectives and officers of various units aimed at cracking down on gang activities. Responding to questions,  he said the cluster had been identified as one of the poorest performing clusters amid high crime levels.

Ahead of the press conference, police embarked on a two-day crackdown resulting in the arrest of 180 people for various crimes.

Phahlane also revealed that this week two police officers from Ravensmead Police Station and another two officers from Bellville South Police Station were arrested for corruption.

Meanwhile, Mbalula continued his attack on gangsters in the Western Cape claiming high ranking gang members had no right to call themselves “generals”. “They are called generals because of the horrible things they have done. They must be dealt with, not praised. I said it in Elsies River yesterday, these criminals must know we are coming.”
