The overall murder rate may be down, but more women have been killed over the last quarter than over the same period last year, according to the latest crime statistics presented by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday.
Cele briefed Parliament on Friday morning on the latest statistics, which revealed a 3,1% decrease in the murder rate between April and June this year.
The latest crime statistics for the first quarter of 2023-’24 (April to June 2023) revealed that whilst there was a welcomed general decrease in most crimes compared to the previous year, the violent war against women and children continues unabated.
This is highlighted by increases in murder, attempted murder and assault GBH from the previous year.
Although the Table View and Milnerton police stations were not ranked under the top 30 stations for various crime-related incidents, police warns that crime is still increasing in both areas.
“The community is invited to updates on crime in the area. It is the community’s opportunity to raise concerns regarding policing and crime,” says Capt. Adriana Chandler, Table View police spokesperson.
The Table View station commander, Col Junaid Alcock will present the latest crime statistics on 7 September at Church on the Rise in Bloubergrise at 19:00.
