As winter approaches, the Salvation Army in Goodwood is intensifying its efforts to support vulnerable families in the community.

Staying true to its service mission, the Goodwood Corps recently extended a helping hand to 15 families at President High School. The Corps did this by distributing 10 “Buckets of Love” and five food vouchers. Small yet powerful gestures that reflect the organisation’s ongoing commitment to compassion and care.

“We are so grateful for the opportunity to serve our community today. It’s a privilege to come alongside families during tough times, especially as the cold season sets in,” said Lieutenant Corps Officer Mpumelelo Dathini.

“Bucket of love”

Each “Bucket of Love” contains a selection of essential groceries and household staples — practical items intended to carry a family through a few challenging weeks. Typical contents include rice, spaghetti, mieliepap, sugar, soya mince, tinned fish, baked beans, tea bags, coffee, biscuits, soup mix, flour, yeast, beef stock cubes, and long-life milk. While the contents may vary based on donations and available funds, the intention remains the same: to provide warmth, nourishment, and hope.

‘Meaningful support’

“The buckets are designed to support a family of four for up to three weeks,” explained Dathini. “This initiative was a challenge from our Divisional Headquarters, encouraging every unit to find ways to give meaningful support to our communities. We accepted that challenge — and since December 2024, we’ve distributed a total of 50 Buckets of Love.”

President High School

The recent distribution at President High School came about through a collaborative effort. Educators, responding to concerns shared by learners, identified the most vulnerable families within the school. The school then reached out to The Salvation Army, and thanks to the generosity of donors, the Corps was able to answer the call.

Get involved

With the winter months ahead bringing greater need, the Goodwood Corps is preparing to extend its outreach and is calling on community members and businesses to partner with them in continuing this vital work.

“Whether through food donations, financial contributions, or simply spreading the word, everyone has a part to play,” said Dathini. “Together, we can help ensure no family is left to face winter alone.”

There are several ways to help:

“The Salvation Army is calling on both businesses and individuals to partner with us to fill even more Buckets of Love this winter.

“Your support can bring warmth and dignity to many more families facing hardship,” says Dathini. Shop with a purpose by visiting the Salvation Army Thrift Store, located at 39 Voortrekker Street, Goodwood.
