With the summer season just around the corner and everyone flocking to the beach, residents say they are concerned about beachgoers’ safety at a beach in Milnerton.

According to one of the residents, Matt Weisse, Milnerton Beach, near Woodbridge Island, has become a very dangerous place to walk or swim at.

“There are all kinds of barbed wire and rusted fencing sticking out of the sand,” he said in an email to TygerBurger, with photos attached of the allegations.

Jeffery Gouws said he walked on the beach almost every day and, besides the normal litter on the shore, bottles and barbed wires are visible. He has since stopped his daily walks, after his dog was injured.

“My dog was injured by the barbed wire on this beach,” he pointed out. “I appeal to the City, which is responsible for the barbed wires and other waste, to clean this up. We as residents have the right to walk on beaches safely without all this mess.”

The City confirmed to TygerBurger that the rocks on the beach were remnants of the old slipway exposed during the storm last weekend.

They have since removed that specific rock.

According to the Deputy Mayor and Mayco member for spatial planning and the environment, Eddie Andrews the fencing and barbed wire are from private property belonging to the Woodbridge Island Estate.

The City claims they have met with the estate’s representatives, who have been given until Tuesday to remove it.
