Local athletics club, Kuils River Runners, bagged top spot and R20 000 in prize money as winners of the Coca-Cola league competition.
A total of 108 road running clubs competed in the competition that ran over 12 race fixtures between February and November.
To be competitive in this league clubs must get as many of their members as possible to run in each of the predetermined races.
Every permanently licenced finisher within each race’s stipulated cut-off time earned one point for their club. The number of finishers per club is totalled and then multiplied by a factor based on the number of licences issued by Western Province Athletics (WPA) to the club at the date of each race.
The club with the highest “weighted total” earned 100 points for the race, the next club 98, the next 96, and so on.
Kuils River Runners finished on 984 points, followed by Edgemead Runners on 958 points securing R15 000, and Mitchell’s Plain Titans with 936 points taking third place and R10 000.
According to WPA the weighing factors were modified this year to make the competition between the big and small clubs more equal as the small clubs have dominated the results the past few years.
