Robbery witness gunned down

A 51-year-old father was gunned down in front of his son.


A 51-year-old man, a witness in an armed  robbery case was gunned down in Bishop Lavis on Tuesday. 

According to witnesses the deceased was scheduled to testify in court next week.

Bishop Lavis police spokesperson Captain Marie Louw, says the incident occurred in Green Valley Street in the 8th Avenue informal settlement in Valhalla Park at about 07:15.

“When police arrived on the scene they found the body of Wakeni Swartbooi, who sustained a gunshot wound to his head,” she says.

Louw says according to witnesses the deceased and his son were outside their home loading furniture on a truck when an unknown man walked towards them and started shooting at them. The deceased’s son managed to run away, but his father sustained a gunshot wound to his head and later died on the scene.

Police opened a murder and attempted murder case.

Louw says no arrests has yet been made.
