The City of Cape Town has announced various road closures in Table View ahead of fireworks celebrations for New Year’s Eve.

According to local ward councillor Nicky Rheeder, City officials conducted a thorough site inspection of Killarney Race Track as an alternative venue, amid concerns from residents, but the fire department has deemed the site unsafe for fireworks.

“Among the many reasons, one of the greatest is the large amount of fuel stored on the premises. Therefore, the beachfront site that was used for Guy Fawkes will be used for New Year’s this year. The search for an alternative continues,” she says.

Speaking to the TygerBurger earlier this year, Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, highlighted that the surrounding area outside Killarney was overgrown with dry vegetation and reeds, flammable stores inside the venue and garages that store vehicles and fuel. In addition he said the parking arrangements at the site are unsuitable and will constitute a safety risk.

Rheeder says the roads marked on the map (see image) will be closed at the demarcated points from 16:00 on Saturday 31 December.

The parking lots from Marine Circle to Dolphin Beach will be closed from 14:00 on 31 December  until the early hours of Sunday 1 January.

“Only official and pre-arranged vehicles will be allowed to enter the cordoned-off areas. All safety precautions will be taken with fire, Law Enforcement, Metro and medical teams on site, among others. There will be no trading allowed between Marine Circle and Dolphin Beach. Trading is only permitted in demarcated trading areas between Marine Circle and Blouberg by permit holders.”
