Protea Home, located on Alice Street in Goodwood, is experiencing a remarkable transformation, thanks to the dedication of seven honorary non-residents who go above and beyond to enhance the lives of its residents.

Mike Doo, an 80-year-old senior resident, speaks highly of these volunteers, describing how their unique contributions are turning the senior home into a vibrant pleasure resort.

Doo starts off with Anne-Marie Jordaan, a retired police general, who leads both the house committee and the entertainment committee. “She runs the bi-weekly art class and movies, as well as any special activities,” says Doo. “Her mother lives in the home, and Anne-Marie’s energy and dedication are invaluable.”

Lillian van Wyk, also a retired police brigadier, operates the in-house tuck shop. “Lillian is totally service-oriented and always ready to help,” Doo continues. “She also serves on the entertainment committee and is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.”

Warm hugs

Kobus Mays, a friendly and strong-willed visitor, has made it his mission to befriend and entertain every resident. “Kobus checks in on the frail in the sun room and the ailing in the sick bay,” says Doo. “He is incredibly popular and always lifts our spirits.”

Kobus’ wife, Delene Mays, complements his efforts with her loving and kind nature. “When they arrive, we know they are in the building. Delene’s warm hugs are something we old men look forward to,” Doo adds.

Gavin Best, a recently retired marine engineer from the South African Navy, is the home’s jack of all trades. “Gavin helps with any technical problems and serves on the entertainment committee, always looking for ways to improve the building structure,” says Doo.

Gavin’s wife, Beverley Best, visits her mother, Yvonne, at every opportunity, bringing warmth and cheer to many residents. “Beverley also lends a hand to the entertainment team,” notes Doo.

Lastly, Mannetjies Venter, a brilliant musician, entertains residents bi-weekly with his electric guitar and backing tracks. “His music is exceptional, and many residents dance to it,” says Doo.

Personal experience

While these seven volunteers stand out to Doo personally, he emphasises that many other non-residents also regularly assist with Wednesday activities and other calls for duty. “I am deeply humbled by the blessings that surround me,” Doo reflects. “This story is my personal experience from my 10 months as a resident at Protea Home.”

Living at Protea Home with his wife Seri, who has recovered from a debilitating illness and breast cancer, Doo’s gratitude for the community’s support is palpable. The dedication of these honorary non-residents is a testament to the power of community and the impact of selfless service.
