In a remarkable display of community spirit and determination, one of the Marlborough Friends Group has transformed an open field in Sunningdale into a beautiful park for everyone to enjoy.
Once an unkempt and neglected space, the field has been given a new lease on life, becoming a vibrant and welcoming area for the entire community.
Spearheading this transformative project was local resident Terry McDonogh, whose vision and leadership galvanised the group into action. With the support of the Ward councillor, Jonathan Mills, McDonogh hired a team of workers to plant trees, shrubs, and flowers, turning the barren field into a lush green oasis. Benches, walking paths, a bridge and gym equipment were added to ensure the park caters to people of all ages and interests.
“We wanted to create a space where residents could relax, connect with nature, and come together as a community. We are still very much busy and have big plans for the space,” says McDonogh. “It’s amazing to see how the park has brought people together and become a symbol of what can be achieved when we work as a team.”
Residents taking ownership
The City also provided water for the project, ensuring the newly planted greenery would thrive. During rainy days, the park comes alive with an extra charm as ducks visit the ponds that form underneath the bridge, adding a serene touch to the area.
Mills commended the group’s efforts, noting the significant impact the park will have on improving the quality of life in the area. “This project is a shining example of how residents can take ownership of their community spaces and make a real difference,” Mills says.
Local residents have already begun enjoying the park, taking quiet strolls along the pathways. The Marlborough Friends Group has also planned regular maintenance and community events to keep the park vibrant and well-used.
