Remembering Alec de Sani: A tribute to a beloved figure in Blue Downs Spurs and the soccer community

Alec de Sani

The soccer community and particularly the community of Blue Downs Spurs are in mourning after the sudden death of junior chair Alec de Sani last week.

Muneem Solomons, spokesperson for the club, says De Sani played a vital role in the community and the club.

“He served our club in many roles as FMC Chairman doing booking of the fields and making sure the fields we would play on were up to standard, and then he was also our club’s junior chair having to look after more than 500 juniors on a weekly basis,” Solomons says.

“He loved working with juniors, whether it was coaching a team, teaching them the fundamentals of football or just being a supportive father to his son who is coaching and being a father figure to all the boys at Blue Downs Spurs.”

Humble and happy

He also served as a coach on our NSLFA board team, taking the senior board team to compete in the Eastern Cape,” says Solomons.

According to Solomons, De Sani was loved universally. “For all his years at Blue Downs Spurs not once can anyone say they ever saw him raise his voice at anyone, or get upset and angry with anyone because that was the person Alec was. He was humble, happy and a positive human being.

“He loved his family very much and he loved his Blue Downs Spurs family just the same. Alec has left a massive void to fill, one that will surely take our club a long time to fill, but the greatness in the man and the serving of Blue Downs Spurs will never be forgotten. He will always be in our hearts,” says Solomons.

After the announcement was made on social media, many people poured their hearts out about De Sani.

Jon Johannes Wiese wrote on Facebook: “Our deepest empathy to the De Sani family and broader families associated with the De Sani families and all the soccer families.

“Thank you sir for all you did for our youngsters. I had the privilege to work with you. Rest soft sir in the glory of your Father and Maker.”

Kanya Dukashe wrote. “Father, leader and legend, thank you for your faithfulness to our club.”
