Refusing to join gang leads to man’s death

Elsies River police say a 24-year-old man was killed after refusing to join a gang in Epping Forest.

A 24-year-old man was killed in Epping Forest today (14 March) after allegedly refusing to join a local gang.

Elsies River police spokesperson, Captain Daphne O’Reilly says officers were called to an open field in Yardley Close where they found the bullet ridden body of Wendel Pikaan.

She says it is alleged that Pikaan was standing against the wall smoking when he was approached by two members of the Rufty Bundy gang. One of the men was armed and opened fire on Pikaan.

O’Reilly says he had several gunshot wounds which included one in his head. He was declared dead on the scene.

“Pikaan was allegedly not a member of any gang and according to reports the Rufty Bundy gang members tried to recruit him but he refused.”

Police are now investigating Pikaan’s murder and call on anyone with information to call the Elsies River Police Station on 021 928 1400.
