With the rising number of stray and abandoned pitbull dogs roaming the streets, the Indelicate Pit Bull Rescue Organisation needs assistance to help these furry friends.

Currently having 32 dogs in their care, they rescue abused, neglected and mistreated pitbulls and pitbull cross-breeds.

“Pitbulls are the most misused breed for their strength but have the same heart as any other dog. All they want is love and companionship,” says Julia Jones from Indelicate Pit Bull Rescue.

To help raise funds for these animals, Nitida and Yogaville are hosting an event called “Yoga for a cause” presenting a yoga class to those attending.

The fundraising event will take place on 20 February from 09:00 at the Nitida Wine Farm, Durbanville. Tickets cost R150 per person.

Jones says they have some awesome prizes lined up for the day valued at around R7 000 – all in aid to raise funds for pits.

“With this breed being the most misused in the world we are fighting a non-stop battle. We know that we cannot save them all but we try our utmost best to make a difference to the ones we can. With rent, vet bills, water, electricity, rehabilitation, staff payments, food and our recent expense ‘theft’ we are struggling to make ends meet and live day-to-day, week-to-week. The only way we get by making a change to these amazing animals is by public donations, fundraising, or digging in our own pockets each month,” Jones says.

Jones told TygerBurger that because of their strength, this breed is misunderstood and used for the wrong purposes, but just like any other animal “all they want is love and companionship”, she says.

By supporting the fundraiser, it will allow them to continue making a difference.

“To date, we have rehomed 59 dogs with amazing families. Very strict home checks apply to make sure they only get the best homes.”

More about Indelicate Pit Bull Rescue

Indelicate Pit Bull Rescue was founded by Ciel-Marie Kock who ran a sub-branch in Cape Town for three years under Gudwulf’s Pit Bull Rescue Johannesburg.

“We then, in December 2021, decided to break away and go on our own. Our Cape Town branch was born on 26 March 2019. We take in abused, neglected, and confiscated pitbulls. We heal the broken and injured and then find them suitable forever homes. We also focus on educating the public on good, responsible dog ownership, focusing on different breed-specific traits and how to guide dogs through their short life journeys,” Jones says.

Bonding and trust

“The bond we have with these ‘pitties’ is unique in every kind of way. Every day, we go to each one at the kennels, give them time to run around and play on the field, give them treats, train them, comfort them. We work with each of them and each of them respects you, as long as you give them the respect they need,” Jones says.

Indelicate Pit Bull Rescue rescues the type of “pitties” that are subjected to dogfighting, chained up, starved, abused and neglected.

“We try our best to build their trust and most of all, we show them that human touch can represent love, care and affection.”

One of the dogs at their centre, Drake, will be there to welcome the guests at the event on Sunday and is available for adoption.

He was rescued from a home where he was extremely neglected, living with drug addicts and riddled with ticks and fleas.

“He never ever got the love and attention that he deserved and despite this, he’s such a sweet, loving and affectionate boy. Drake loves children big and small and will kiss your face off if you allow him. Not to mention nibble your chin,” Jones says.

Another furry pit at the centre, Jomo, was rescued after being cordoned off in a small section of a garage. He hardly saw the outdoors and never socialized with anyone else. He was not able to develop any social skills.

“Jomo is approximately 18 months old and doing so well,” she says.

“He is not yet up for adoption and I’m not sure when or if he will be ready, but he gets the love he needs with us and he’s improving day by day and growing into a beautiful, confident boy.”
