Brackenfeller Rudi van Zyl (35) put the entire city of Cape Town out of their misery this morning when he managed to crack the Secret Sounds Competition on radio station Smile 90.4, winning himself a hefty R90 000.
The sound of a pin being pulled from a fire extinguisher had thousands of Capetonians scratching heads for five weeks.
“Rudi and his friends worked through the cryptic clues given on our website weekly to get the answer and ultimately recognised the sound because of safety training he had undergone two years ago, during which he had to use a fire extinguisher,” says Kerry McIntyre, marketing manager at SmileFM.
Rudi says he had been trying for weeks to crack the riddle, but felt confident with his guess for the first time this morning.
“I phoned 35 times to get through!” he said jubilantly.
Rudi is getting married on 18 March and says the money will go a long way to giving his wife-to-be a honeymoon to remember.
“We will definitely be sipping cocktails at some exotic destination come next year,” he said.
Eber Collops, on the other hand, could kick himself for not listening to his wife.
“He called in just before Rudi with two options: one being the correct one, supplied by his wife. Eber reckoned his guess of a pin being pulled from a hand grenade was the right answer though, and opted for that,” says McIntyre.
“To help ease the sting, a consolation prize is in the mail!” McIntyre adds.
