A public
petition to curb any further development in Silver Oaks and Langverwacht Road
was launched on Change.org by resident Moveen Adams today.

In this
petition to the City of Cape Town, Adams pleads with local authorities to stop
approving new high density developments in this area.

Kuils River is becoming a cold concrete suburb.

“We have
the right to say no to over development of our area. The traffic congestion is
already a major problem in Kuils River. Our sewerage system is already
affected. Our beautiful trees with its squirrels will be no more. We as the
community of Kuils River say “No!” to more developments and the criminal
elements they attract,” she stated on the petition.

Her
petition is strengthened by section 7 1b of the  National Building
Regulations and Building Standards Act, which states that a municipality must
reject a building plan if it is satisfied that the building to be erected would
probably disfigure the area concerned, “be unsightly or objectionable,
negatively affect the value of adjoining neighbouring properties or endanger
life or property.”

“Yet, plans
for new developments are still being approved by the City of Cape Town’s
Transport and Urban Development authority. Soon all our trees, birdlife and
squirrels will be something of the past,” she said.

“Letters of
objection and petitions are being overlooked because nothing is about the
‘people’ anymore,” she told TygerBurger.

Adams urges
all local residents to sign the online petition that will be delivered to the
City of Cape Town.

According
to her Kuils River is becoming a cold concrete suburb.

“What is
happening to our quiet, tranquil, beloved and peaceful neighbourhoods? Our
roads are becoming a nightmare to face every morning and evening. Our lives are
in danger and our homes are being burgled,” she said.

Adams says
the criminal elements came along with all the new developments.

“Everything
is about making money. How much people/families they can cramp up into a small
space. Kuils River is already overpopulated. When is it going to be enough?”
she wants to know.

She says
the quality of life local residents have become accustomed to is dwindling.

“What
happened to “our say” in this matter? We can no longer stand by and watch
developers making all the decisions. This is affecting all of us. We also have
a right. Let us stand together and take back our area.”

TygerBurger
is awaiting comment from the City of Cape Town.
