Early-morning traffic was disrupted this morning due to protests on the R300, also known as the Cape Flats Freeway, at Mitchell’s Plain in Cape Town.

Roads were closed in both directions for almost an hour while police dispersed protesters, who burnt tyres on the normally-busy thoroughfare.

Kevin Jacobs, spokesperson for City Traffic Services, said all enforcement agencies were on the scene.

He said the R300 was closed from the AZ Berman Drive turn-off to Jakes Gerwel Drive and from there back to the N2.

The delays caused heavy congestion which further exacerbated traffic slowness in AZ Berman Drive. This arterial road has been especially congested in recent months due to the construction of the MyCiti bus lane.

Lentegeur police station spokesperson, Const Navon van Houten, said that by 7:30 all roads were open both ways and had been cleared of debris.

A strong police presence was maintained in the area until late afternoon.

No-one was injured nor anyone arrested.
